SUMMARY:Keynote Event: C.R. Lawn\, "The FEDCO SEED CATALOG: More Than a Marketing Tool"
DESCRIPTION:C.R. SUMMARY:Laressa Dickey\, "From the Association of Stubborn Folks: All them pretty houses won’t feed them people"
DESCRIPTION:How do we make a life in a place? How do we become of that place? How\, when we leave that place\, can it be that it never lets us leave? What is the mark it makes? How do we come to terms with the fact that we can never not be of that place. How do we make places\, especially rural ones? How do our places make us? \nPlace\, Responsibility\, and Stewardship are questions to live—as are ownership\, bank payments\, family feuds\, resentments\, control\, whiteness. From the land come honey hives\, deer plots and wild collards; we undertake conservation of the soil\, change the course of the creek so it doesn’t erode; we talk about intervention\, stories of our own agency. Also\, less often: we say we failed\, there was bud worm on the tobacco\, the pig barn burnt down\, there was cancer. But we lived to tell it\, we bore it out. \nLaressa Dickey will read poems and talk about growing up on a farm in Tennessee\, telling the story of being formed by that place and by the people in it.

SUMMARY:Workshop with Laressa Dickey\, "Diligence\, Devotion\, Common(s)ense: Shopping for Poems in the Fedco Seed Catalog"
DESCRIPTION:Many chart the year by the annual dreaming we do while thumbing through (or scrolling through) a seed catalog. Thoughts and inklings of herbs\, vegetables\, fruits become places that are walked off\, plotted out\, tilled\, worked over\, and seeded with what we wish to cultivate\, what we wish to eat\, or sell\, or what we wish to see in vases. In this writing workshop hosted by poet Laressa Dickey\, participants will use the Fedco Seed Catalog as a departure point for making poems—small texts that are spaces to contain memory\, desire\, and imagination.

SUMMARY:The New Commons Film Series: WITHIN OUR GATES
DESCRIPTION:Oscar Micheaux was one of first African American film directors\, and\, like Spike Lee in BlacKkKlansman\, uses Within Our Gates (1920) to engage in a critical dialogue with D. W. Griffith’s epic The Birth of a Nation (1915)\, a pro-Ku Klux Klan film that both Micheaux and Lee suggest has been a contributing factor to anti-black violence. \nWithin Our Gates focuses on the character Sylvia Landry\, who is dedicated to raising money to support the education of black children\, and whose tragic past is revealed in series of flashbacks\, including a shocking sequence (which resulted in the widespread censorship and outright banning of the film) depicting the lynching of her parents at the hands of a white vigilante mob. \nWithin Our Gates has been preserved and restored by the Library of Congress\, and was released in 2016 mastered in HD\, and with a new soundtrack composed by Paul D. Miller (aka DJ Spooky).
